As the government moves to revive its once thriving bike industry, experts say the country still lacks infrastructure to cater to the needs of a burgeoning population.
The National Capital Region’s bike lanes are still in disrepair, and roads are often lined with debris and trash.
The capital, Dhaka, was one of the first cities in Bangladesh to adopt the idea of a bicycle boulevard, but that project has largely stalled.
Bangladesh’s bicycle industry is one of its fastest-growing sectors and has seen more than 20,000 new bicycle-related jobs created since 2013, according to the Bangladesh Tourist Board, a tourism agency.
“We have to be mindful of the future of the country,” said Nazeeruddin Mujahid, the executive director of the National Bicycle Manufacturers Association, a trade association representing bike makers.
But, Mujahideen said, “it’s important to take care of the present as well as the future.”
The bicycle industry also faces the threat of becoming an industry that is dependent on a global marketplace that is changing.
For one, the world is rapidly expanding and consumers are demanding a better product.
“In the future, if we don’t make a better choice, if a brand does not make a good product, we may be out of business,” Mujahida said.
That will not only put pressure on the industry, but also the country.
Bangladesh’s bicycle manufacturers have been growing at a faster pace than the rest of the economy for years.
They have invested billions of dollars in their factories and are building roads, new facilities and more bike parking.
But, in recent years, they have been facing a new challenge.
According to a study conducted by the International Cycling Union (UCI), the world’s largest bicycle industry has been hit by a downturn in the number of new bicycle brands, as well the demand for bicycles that are less than 100cc.
Many of the companies that are making bikes in the developing world are also facing the threat that the market will become saturated with bikes that are smaller than 100 cc.
A bike manufacturer in Bangladesh is currently struggling to compete with brands that are selling bikes at a larger capacity.
“We are struggling to get a bike at the current price point, because there is less demand,” said Ahmed Ali, president of the Bicycle Industry Association of Bangladesh, which represents the country’s bicycle companies.
There is also the fact that the bicycle market in Bangladesh has seen a rise in pollution.
The number of cars on the road in the country has been growing rapidly, and in 2016, it surpassed that of China, according a study by the World Bank.
In addition, the country is still suffering from a severe drought that has forced many to reduce their food production, leaving many consumers hungry.
And, there are other factors that are hurting the industry.
“The climate is changing rapidly, with temperatures rising and the sea level rising,” said Mujahides.
Most of the factories in Bangladesh have been left with limited capital, so they are struggling financially, according the Bike Industries Association.
In some cases, they are unable to find investors to finance their investments.
Meanwhile, the bicycle industry in Bangladesh continues to grow, despite the challenges.
The Bicycle Industry Assocation of Bangladesh has been providing financial assistance to businesses since 2014.
Mujahad said they have invested around $5 million in new factories.
“We have a very active group of about 50 employees,” he said.
“It’s very hard for us to say that we are the fastest growing business in the whole country.”
However, he said that it will be a while before they are able to build up a sufficient capital to fund the investments.
“Our capacity is very limited,” Muahid said.
The Bike Industries Assocation has also partnered with the Bangladesh Bike Company Association to launch a new crowdfunding campaign to help build up capital.
The BIA hopes to raise $10 million in its campaign to build a new factory in Bangladesh, and Mujahids hopes to see that amount raised within the next month.
Mujahidee said that the BIA has been helping the bike industry for years, and that it is important to provide them with an infrastructure.
But, he added, “It is also important to be aware of the changes in the market, and the need to plan for the future and plan for future cycles.”
